Of Languages and Flames.

Provocation Abstract: 5 Years here, and can't manage a fluent line in KannaDa yet.

Me: Basically, all that people require, more often than not is just a compulsion, Which is what the Tams create ever so well.

Her: I'm completely against compulsions. If you find something interesting enough you will pick it up.
And some people just don't have the flair to pick languages up.

Me: Lest there be some compulsion compulsive enough, why will people even make an effort to blend with local cultures, languages et al? The default tendency for people is to continue to remain inert, lethargic and glued to their stable octet shells.
The Marwaris and the like wouldn't be as linguistically dexterous if not for their compulsions.

And what is the ultimate benefit?

  • If there can be less hatred and more seamless national integrity, why not?
  • The world is going multilingual, for people have come to accept the shortcomings of the endevor to bring in a de-facto linguistic standard. English can do the job only to an extent; and even to actually take English to the world, it's but inevitable that the medium to learn English should again be in a native language!
  • How insanely hypocritical would it be in this age of multilinguality (The web for instance, where everybody's opting for l10n, i18n and multilinguality) to have a mental block against local cultures and languages? especially in a place like India where there 're diversities galore. You'd almost be as much a unidimensional, totalitarian bigot as he who needs to pray to(ward) only one direction, one place, one book, one god and one .....
  • Picking up a language hardly hurts. It can help, on the contrary. Why not? Isn't it a moral responsibility towards the the people, culture that's been receptive to you?
  • This has by far been the only reason for the dominance of Dravidian Chauvinism and nationalism down here in the south. Hindi imposition, chauvinism does not work here.
  • Typically, in the Indian context, you 've two solutions out. Either that everybody learns all the languages of the state (atleast the 24(?)) or that migrants make it a point to blend with regional cultures, languages and the like.
  • The result: I guess you'd have less racist hatred, less northie vs southie flames, lesser aryan vs dravidian flames and less mutual hatred in general. The more viable option out, ofcourse.
  • The Tams have done this, but they 've meted out plain old hostility to the immigrants. Not a very pleasant proposition
  • The Kannadigas have miserably failed, as I guess have the Marathis. There's only frustration brewing up under the covers though.
  • Some people never freaking get the point.
  • Languages are learnt. They needn't be taught. Compulsions and Vested interests are normally requisites.
  • If you 're going to make a life out here and if you 've issues against respecting the language, you 're a plain bigot.
  • One More Inference: It's the speakers for the most part that actually sustain the language. The movies, The Literature certainly aid, help in the process...But really it's a catch 22 here..and in an obscure kind of way, The movies, The literature and the like are primarily subsidiary inspirations rather than the perpetrators of mainstream linguistic  sustainance.

She: agrees but disagrees.

Excel Can't Count.

News for all the microsoft hate-clubs.

http://www.itpro.co.uk/blogs/editorial-blogs/jon-honeyball/964879/excel-cant-count-and-heres-proof.thtml

BTW, I read there that they released the .NET source code too, Under a 'touch-but-dont-grope' license.

More Anti Microsoft Campaigns here

Now this is some food for thought. Rebelling for a cause.

Uh-huh

Me: Intriguing isn't it? There 're hardly any vulgarities in Indian tongues that really abuse you. It's always about your parents, forefathers.
Him: Thats just how it is. Parva dalli nodu, Bhyrappa demonstrates how the concept of parentage, patern-age has become the identity of the individual.
Me: Nija.

The Ad Critique Reloaded

This is on the Kannada version of the Airtel ad.

The kid plays in the rain, Finally calls his dad up who's in the middle of nowhere. So thats great news about Airtel connectivity. This is what follows

Kid: appa..
Dad: heLu magane

lol. Now that tickles me. No reasonable dad (who knows reasonable kannada ofcourse) would address his son as "magane". "Mogu" is acceptable, "Mari" is acceptable too. Magane is normally prefixed with a rather vulgar adjective as to say a thing or two about your parents. Cant they pay somebody who knows some Kannada to translate it for them?

As is with the Horlicks ad.

The Kids: "Dinaagloo horlicks kudidvi"

How hard is it to grammatize it with a str_replace("Dinagloo", "Dinavoo",...) ?

I'd like to some banners like the one on the Bamboo Bazaar busstop popping up. "Kannada nirlakshya beda"

Where's the Kannada?

We've seen all the misdirected kannada chauvinism by arbitrary retards on Orkut.. Yeah, I mean those folks who created that "Bangalore's full Go Home" community...flamed useless e-wars to prove they were gangsta...and had their community deleted too.

But all that I got to notice there was relatively unprovoked flamery against Northies. Sure, There 're them arbitrary retards...but obviously they aren't the folks who make the majority..Atleast, so far as I know..I'd rate less than 50% Northies as being anything ignorant.

On the contrary, Here 're the Tamilians..Of whom I'd rate Atleast, a good 80% or more to being fanatics. Tamil sadly, is about as or (in all probability) perhaps more  a staple regional language here in the capital of Kannada..Than Kannada itself.

If I were to do a survey about my friends' circle.. I'd probably find out more than 50% of them, who've been in karnataka more than a generation still cant speak a whiff of Kannada!.. All tamil flamery comes during the Cauvery issue and gets forgotten in millsecs. I amn't against Tamil or anything as such..But on the contrary a huge Tamil fan so far as it's beauty as a language goes...But really, Whilst in Karnataka..Please care to respect Kannada for we've an identity of our own. Do we try to speak about in Kannada when we are in Madras? Not that we'd survive doing that either.

This is in the wake of a rather (stupid) hilarious incident where I got into a rather nasty fight where I got knocked about by 6 arbitrary sons of bitches.. While I was rather stupid to  (!shut the fuck up and move on to keep move on).. What irked me and made me lose my temper was that these bastards spoke in Tamil continiously whilst I politely asked them to speak in Kannada.. Such is their audacity..and in Karnataka too. Not to mention yet again, That I completely lost control off my wits for that few minutes. The end result = A shaky tooth, Plenty of wounds in the mouth that would soon evolve into painful ulcers, This would require Oral Anasthesia to ward off the pain for a couple of weeks..Not to mention the stammering whilst speaking to people !...Yeah, all this happened and I can still laugh it off

So I board a bus from home till Indian Express..and I dont hear a fucking whiff of the native language except for the conductor!..There's Tamil all around..No shortage of Telugu either.. aye, there's malayalam as well..Not to mention the omnipresent 'national language' hindi...

I really find it intriguing that kannadigas still take ignorance to all this... There 're the retarded morons who go about the Kannada-Tamil relationship et al... And give me excerpts from Periyar's Aryan Invasion Theory.. I've not but the patience and calm to tell them to go fuck themselves.

^:)^ To Ravi Belagere

http://thatskannada.oneindia.in/column/ravibelagere/index.html

I'll beg to differ about aavaraNa, but for the most part..Ravi Belagere happens to have most pragmatic takes on things. Truly an articulate genius.

Vijay Karnataka FTW !

Just came across the 'intellectual molestation' that's been meted out to URA... much as he deserved it. Another communist hypocrite... I'm beginning to feel increasingly sure of myself that SLB has actually modeled the Shastri Character in aavaraNa with none other than URA in mind. Really, Vijaya Karnataka is amongst the few enterprises that actually do justice to the ethics of journalism. Otherwise, it's just us bloggers.
