The International Year of Astronomy has Dawned!!
The IAU and UNESCO have declared this year to be the "International Year of Astronomy" to commemorate Galileo's observation of Jupiter's moons through his telescope. See http://www.astronomy2009.org for details.
The mission of this year, for BAS just as for many other astronomy-related establishments - both amateur and professional, is to popularize astronomy and to take astronomy to as many people as possible, and at every level.
The IAU has also resolved to work on other areas where attention is needed like Light Pollution awareness, Better astronomy education etc. which will prove beneficial for the future of astronomy. BAS will join IAU in this, along with hundreds of astronomy establishments worldwide. read more »

Report on the Observing Session, 6th December 2008
This was a BAS Observing Session coming after months! Shweta, Sathya, Madhu, Akarsh, Amar, Ravindra, Rakesh, Sunil and Pavan attended the event.
Sathya and Co. set up the School's 8" Telescope and trained it at the setting moon and took a few shots. Amar had brought his Oberwerk 25x100 binoculars with Paralellogram mount from his home, all the way. Amar had left the base to support the tripod, but the Engineers and Instrumentation folk (Madhu, Sathya, Ravindra) put together their brains and used a rope to tie up the tripod in place! Soon, the 25x100 was set up and ready for observing. read more »
Biggest Full Moon of Year 2008
Full Moon on 11/12 Dec is the biggest and brightest full moons of year 2008.
Above picture shows two full moons taken by thro a 6 inch reflector telescope 6 months apart.
A simple photography project can be taken by students and amature astronomers, taking full moon photos every month for 1 year can clearly show the changes in the size of Moon due to its elicptical orbit round the earth.
The nearest point(Perigee) and farthest point(Apogee) on Moon orbit differs by approximately 55,000 Kms !! read more »

Smiley face created by Venus, Jupiter and Moon
Today ( 1st Dec 2008 ) the planets Venus and Jupiter appeared to be close to each other along with Moon. ( looking like a smiley face " :) "
This is not a "physical" get together - only a "visual" alignment from our terrestrial perspective.
In fact moon is going to occult Venus that night but the even will not be visible from India.
Watch out for a similar event during 30.Dec.2008 read more »
